Fathers Day – “king-priest”

Pastor James

Father's Day with Pastor James Boyd

Father’s Day with Pastor James Boyd. A message on the king-priest of the home.

1 Peter 2:9 NKJV – But you  are  a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light

God calls us a royal priesthood.

  • After Jesus, this was the first time in human history that the king and priest were one person.

A king has authority, but a priest has access.

  • You have both authority and access as a king-priest

God has what it takes, and He’s given you access.

Golden Windows story

  • It’s easy to understand, but much more difficult to believe about ourselves
  • Maybe it’s not what you’ve thought, perhaps you’re exactly what God designed for your family. Maybe God is proud of who you are, because He’s called you to royalty. He believes that you can do it.
    • You’ve pictured too many others as the ideal person, and the ideal person is actually you. You are the shining house with golden windows that seems so far away.

Believing what God says about us:

Revelation 5:9-10 NKJV – For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.

Isaiah 61:6 BBE – But you will be named the priests of the Lord, the servants of our God: you will have the wealth of the nations for your food, and you will be clothed with their glory.

You are who God says you are, you don’t have to look any further.

God has what it takes, and He’s given you access.

  • Guys have an easier time seeing themselves as kings than priests. We have a definition of priest in our minds that doesn’t match us. But, God says we are. It’s a matter of seeing what God says and allowing that to be your view of you.
    • Examples (practice being a king-priest):
      • Wake up in the morning and say, “I am the king-priest of this house, enemy you have no right in here. I send you away from this house and this family in Jesus name.”
      • Cover your family in prayerfor the day before you leave, and perhaps even before they get up in the morning.”
        • Pastor Sarah said last week at the Troy campus: “When we release prayer, God releases power.”
      • When you call yourself what God calls you, your motives, actions, and thoughts will start to line up with what He says. They have no other choice.
        • When you make the choice to say what God says, the rest of your body has to line up with it.
    • Wives, you’re not off the hook here either. It’s not just about your husband aligning himself. It’s about you calling him what God calls him too.
      • Many times wives are waiting, but they’re job is to water that seed as well. If you want your husband to grow, you’re job is not to pick him apart…it’s to call him what God believes of him.
      • Examples (for the wife):
        • Call him a royal priesthood.
        • Call his decisions for the day blessed.
        • Call even what he isn’t into existence.
          • My wife example: she has been calling things into existence in me since we got married. Trust me, I needed and still need it. Nobody is too big to grow. I thank God for a wife that tries to see God’s point of view, instead of her own.
          • This supports what God is doing in your man. This activates what God wants to do. God needs your support to get involved here on earth.
            • God won’t invade your choice, but He can soften a heart.
            • I had a lot of sharp edges, and still have some. But, my wife bought in for the long haul, so she’s in it to win it. Are you in it to win it, ladies? If so, then support him in his growth, rather than beat him up for his pace.

Double portion of authority,

Where the word of a king is, there is power” (Ecclesiastes 8:4), and as priests, “by their word every controversy and every assault shall be settled”. (Deuteronomy 21:5)

God has what it takes, and He’s given you access.

  • Broken families – separated – “But, I’m not married.”
  • Gods got a structure setup for you too.
    • 1 Corinthians 7:14 NKJV - For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.
      • You’re covered if you have an unbelieving spouse, or a broken marriage. Single moms are also a royal priesthood, a holy nation.
      • Galatians 3:28 NKJV – There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

God has what it takes, and He’s given you access.

King-priest at work: You will have an edge over worldly businessmen.

King-priest parent: Bless your children.

King-priest over yourself: The devil is neither a king nor a priest. There is no power in his words. But there is power in yours because you are a king-priest in Christ!

God has what it takes, and He’s given you access.

The way Jesus set it up in the 2 Great Commandments:

Matthew 22:37 NKJV – Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.

  • It’s not as if God is telling us we have to love Him more. Many of us get caught up here and have been taught that we have to love God more. You’re safe their. He knows you love Him
    • Heart- kardia
      • The center of all physical and spiritual life
      • What you love. What takes your attention.
    • Soul- psyche (root word: psycho).
      • Now, nobody point at your spouse and use this word (psycho).
      • The everlasting life part of you.
      • Meaning of root is to “wax cold” – difference from wax hot and wax cold is cooling a situation or making it worse. Wax cold is weighing words, keeping your cool, and cooling down those around you.
    • Minddianoia
      • Understanding, feeling, desiring
      • This is where your action is defined.
      • Dia – the channel of an act
      • Noia (nous) – the power of considering and judging soberly, calmly and impartially
  • When we accept Jesus into our heart and give Him full attention, we will be able to cool situations, feelings, and desires down with our understanding of how to act and judge soberly, calmly, and impartially.
  • This was God’s plan of attack for the king-priest of the home.

God has what it takes, and He’s given you access.

The story of Samuel and Saul: Priest First

  • Samuel was the priest and Saul was assigned king due to the people calling for a king rather than just a priest. They looked at their neighbors and wanted to be like them. God was ok with just a priest, but He met the people’s desire.
  • However, Samuel anointed Saul as king. There was a precedence set here. The priest heard from God, and the priest was the one supported by God in charge.
  • Samuel’s heart: (1 Samuel 12:23 NKJV) “Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way.
  • Priest first, king second. When you hear from God, you will know how to lead.

God has what it takes, and He’s given you access.

How to:

  • Use your wife for insight in communicating with your kids
    • How did I handle that?
    • What went wrong in that communication?
    • Use your kids for insight on how to interact with them
      • Find what they like and do it
      • Hear the unspoken needs and likes that they have
        • Watch them closely and be interested
    • Allow them to see your consistency with God; it will allow for coaching in their walk later. You can’t coach what you haven’t conquered.
    • Ask them to pray in agreement on big issues and see God move by their prayer requests. Small steps first.
    • Let them see your heart for helping people; be open

God has what it takes, and He’s given you access.

Examples:

  •  You bring Jesus on the scene immediately, and they will too
    • Kids playing backyard and one gets hurt – “no complications in Jesus name
      • Now, their little cousins do the same
      • Their kids, your grandkids, will do the same
  • Weighing your words, and they will too
    • My wife has been a great example of this – walk away before sinning and come back when calm
    • The decision not to argue or dispute in front of the kids.

You are the king-priest of your home. God has what it takes, and He’s given you access.

Don’t look too far for the Golden Windows, because you have what it takes.
